SEOUL — Monks chant. Hanbok flows. Incense wafts. And lanterns light up the night.

For a weekend, Insadong, in Seoul, is transformed into a dizzying colorful mecca for Buddhists from around the world.
It’s my favorite festival by far in Korea.
Whether you are Buddhist or not, you will find peace and beauty in this event.
Known as the Lotus Lantern Festival, the event takes place May 14th-16th in Seoul, a week before Buddha’s actual birthday on May 21.
The festival is a great opportunity to learn more about Buddhism as well as see some really amazing stage performances of Buddhist traditions from across the globe.
The actual lantern parade falls on Sunday evening, so don’t leave before seeing the wonderful lanterns snaking through Seoul. Maybe if you’re lucky, you’ll even go home with a handmade one or one previously held by a marcher.
